Media player in Windows 10 allowed user to sync music files from the library to other storage devices, specifically MP3 players. I cannot find that feature now that I'm running Windows 11

    Welcome Tim Becker,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that you are looking for the music sync feature that was available in Windows Media Player and cannot find it in Windows 11 Media Player.

    Before proceeding, could you clarify:

    • Are you using the new Media Player app included with Windows 11, or Windows Media Player Legacy?
    • What is the make and model of the MP3 player or storage device you are trying to sync to?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

Step 1: Check whether Windows Media Player Legacy is installed

    • Open Start and search for Windows Media Player Legacy
    • If it is not available, go to Settings > Apps > Optional Features and add Windows Media Player Legacy

Step 2: Connect the device and verify it is detected correctly

    • Open File Explorer and confirm the device appears under This PC
    • If available, set the device to MTP or File Transfer mode

Step 3: Try syncing with Windows Media Player Legacy

    • Open Windows Media Player Legacy
    • Connect the device and wait for it to be recognized
    • Add music to the Sync List and check whether the Sync tab appears

Step 4: Test manual file transfer

    • Open the device in File Explorer
    • Copy a few music files directly to the device's Music folder and verify that the device can read them

In Windows 11, the old Windows Media Player sync experience is not a standard feature in the newer Media Player app. For Windows Media Player synchronization, automatic sync is supported for these device types by default:

    1. MTP devices
    2. Mass-storage devices
    3. Windows CE devices (Windows Media Player 10 Mobile and later)

If using Windows Media Player Legacy, the sync workflow can still appear when a compatible device is recognized. A practical path is:

    1. Connect the MP3 player.
    2. Make sure the device is recognized as an MTP or file transfer device.
    3. Open Windows Media Player Legacy.
    4. Select tracks, right-click them, and choose Add To > Sync List.
    5. If the device is recognized, the Sync List appears on the right.

If the sync option does not appear, the device likely is not being recognized in a supported mode. For non-default device types, Windows Media Player synchronization requires the device to meet additional requirements such as advertising the PAP device interface, supporting IMDSPDevice3, setting UseExtendedWmdm to DWORD 1, and implementing specific WMDM interfaces.

On Windows 11 N editions, media synchronization can also be unavailable because Windows Portable Devices support and related media features are excluded until the Media Feature Pack is installed.
