For a Windows 10/11 PC, the normal way to add it to a Microsoft account is to sign in on that PC with the Microsoft account that should own it. Non-Surface Windows PCs are added automatically after sign-in; manual serial-number registration is only for Microsoft Surface devices.
Steps:
- On the PC, open Settings > Accounts.
- If the PC is using a local account or a different Microsoft account, switch it to the Microsoft account that should own the device.
- Stay signed in on the PC and connected to the internet.
- Wait for the device to sync. It can take up to 24 hours for the PC to appear in the devices list.
- Check the device list at https://account.microsoft.com/devices.
Important details for the scenario described:
- If the PC was removed from the old account, it can then appear under the new account after sign-in and sync.
- If the PC is a Surface, it can also be registered manually by serial number from https://account.microsoft.com/devices using Register device.
- If the PC is managed or owned by a company or organization, it cannot be registered to a personal Microsoft account.
- If it still does not appear, one documented cause is that it may still be associated with another account.
