How to fix the Easy anti-cheat untrusted system file for Halo: Master Chief Collection through the Xbox App

I have an issue where my Halo: MCC will start to launch and will not run. This is through the XBOX app. I have tried trouble shooting with many inputs from the internet with no luck. The game initially launches and then has an MCCWinStore-Win64-Shipping.exe - Application Error. Once I click ok on that the system shows an easy anti-cheat untrusted system file (\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume4\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.DirectXRuntime_9.29.1976.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\xinput1_3.dll) notification in the corner. I have tried downloading and redownloading the game multiple times, verifying my file many times, installing and reinstalling easy anti cheat several times, and tried running as an administrator multiple times with no success. I do not know where to go next. Thank you.IMG_7354

    Hi @Michael Adali ,

I had exactly the same error message and the same .dll mentioned in the error. What worked for me was the following:

First, open PowerShell as Administrator and run:

    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.DirectXRuntime | Reset-AppxPackage

You may need to run this a few times until PowerShell shows a similar red error message:

Windows cannot remove framework Microsoft.DirectXRuntime_9.29.1976.0_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe because package(s) 436609B6.FortniteClient Microsoft.Chelan currently depends on the framework. Removing all packages that depend on the framework automatically removes the framework.

The important part here is to look at which packages/games PowerShell says are dependent on the Microsoft.DirectXRuntime framework.

In my case, these were Fortnite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. I uninstalled those games/packages, which automatically removed the DirectXRuntime package as well.

You can verify whether it has been completely removed by running:

    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.DirectXRuntime

If everything has been removed successfully, this command should return no output.

After that, reinstall Halo: The Master Chief Collection. In my case, this installed a fresh/new version of DirectXRuntime, and Halo MCC worked again without the error.

Hopefully this helps you as well!

    Hi Michael Adali,

Thank you for providing the details.

The reported file (xinput1_3.dll) is part of the Microsoft DirectX Runtime package used by Microsoft Store and Xbox App games. If Easy Anti-Cheat detects that file as "untrusted," it can sometimes indicate a corrupted runtime component, interference from third-party software, or an issue with the Xbox Gaming Services environment.

You may want to try the following:

1, Close any overlay or monitoring applications

    • Temporarily disable software such as MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, Discord Overlay, ReShade, or similar utilities.
    • Restart the PC and test the game again.

    2, Repair Gaming Services

    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
    • Locate Gaming Services.
    • Select Advanced options > Repair.
    • If needed, use Reset afterward.

3, Reinstall the DirectX Runtime package from the Microsoft Store

    • Open Microsoft Store.
    • Search for Microsoft DirectX Runtime.
    • Check whether an update is available for the installed package and install it if offered.

4, Test in a Clean Boot environment

    • Temporarily start Windows with only Microsoft services enabled.
    • This can help identify whether another application is causing Easy Anti-Cheat to reject the DirectX component.

Hopefully one of the steps above helps isolate the cause. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

The most relevant next steps are to repair Windows app components and check for a permissions problem affecting Microsoft Store apps.

    1. Make sure Windows is fully updated.
      • In Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • Install any available updates, then restart.
    2. Update Microsoft Store.
      • Open Microsoft Store.
      • Select See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
      • Let Store updates finish.
    3. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
      • Select Windows Store apps > Run the troubleshooter.
    4. Repair Windows system files.
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Run:
             chkdsk /f C:

        Restart if prompted.
      • Then run:
             DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

      • These commands require administrator permissions.
    5. Check whether Microsoft Store app permissions were changed.
      • A known cause of Store apps failing to start is modified default registry or file permissions.
      • Important: test changes carefully and back up important data before changing file system permissions.
      • In File Explorer, check these paths and ensure the All Application Packages group has the documented permissions:
        • C:\Program Files → Read & Execute, List folder contents, Read
        • C:\Windows → Read & Execute, List folder contents, Read
        • C:\Users → Full Control
      • If permissions are managed by Group Policy, a Group Policy administrator must correct them in Computer Configuration\Policy\Windows Settings\Security Settings\File System.
    6. Reinstall the game from Microsoft Store library after the checks above.
      • Open Microsoft Store > My Library.
      • Find the app and select Install.
    7. If the issue continues, use Microsoft Support.
      • Go to Contact Microsoft Support, enter the problem, select Get Help, and then Contact Support.

Since reinstalling the game, reinstalling Easy Anti-Cheat, and running as administrator were already tried, the highest-value next steps are Windows Update, Store update, the Store apps troubleshooter, system file repair, and checking Store app permissions.
