my home computer has at some point greyed out option to turn on tamper protection. It has also been put off.

haven't been able to put it back on in safe mode with registry editor either.

If the Tamper Protection setting is greyed out, it is usually being controlled by a policy, third-party antivirus product, or a registry/group policy setting rather than Windows Security itself.

    Check whether:

    • A third-party antivirus is installed.
    • DisableAntiSpyware or related Defender policies exist in the registry.
    • Group Policy settings under Windows Defender Antivirus are configured.

    You can also run:
    Get-MpComputerStatus | Select IsTamperProtected
and post the result. That will help determine whether Tamper Protection is actually disabled or being managed by another setting.
