A Driver is unavailable message usually means the printer driver is missing, outdated, or incompatible. Since scanning works, start with the printer driver and printer reinstall path.
- Update the printer driver in Windows
- Open Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Printers.
- Right-click the printer and select Update driver.
- If Windows finds a compatible driver, install it and test printing.
- Install the latest driver from the printer manufacturer
- Go to the printer manufacturer’s support site.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Download a driver that matches the installed Windows version and system type.
- Install it, then restart the PC.
- Remove and reinstall the printer
- On Windows 11: Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- On Windows 10: Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer and choose Remove or Remove device.
- Restart the PC.
- Return to Printers & scanners and select Add a printer or scanner or Add device.
- After reinstalling, print a test page to confirm it works.
- If the issue started after a recent driver update, roll back the driver
- Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the printer and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart the PC and test printing again.
- Run the printer troubleshooter
- Press Windows logo key + S and search for Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the printer and select Troubleshoot.
- Follow the wizard.
If Windows still shows Driver is unavailable after reinstalling, the next step is to use the manufacturer’s latest compatible driver rather than the current installed one.
