Hello everyone,

I would like to ask whether anyone has experienced a similar issue with Windows 11 File History after installing KB5101684.

Before installing KB5101684 on my laptop, File History worked normally. After modifying files, the backup version history and timestamps in File History were updated correctly.

However, after installing KB5101684, File History may no longer update the backup version history and timestamps, even though files are modified and successfully saved.

The following items have been confirmed:

  • The backup drive (D:) is connected correctly.
  • File History is enabled.
  • The File History service is running normally.
  • The backup location is set to the local D: drive.
  • No File History settings were manually changed.

Problem description:

After modifying Word documents and image files, the files are successfully copied to: D:\FileHistory\user\LAPTOP-GJTRIQFJ\Data\C\Users\user

However:

1.In Restore personal files, the newly created backup version date does not appear. It still shows the old version date (for example, 2026/07/28).

  1. After clicking Run now, the "Latest backup" time shown in File History is still not updated.

3.In File Explorer:

File → Properties → Previous Versions

it shows:

"There are no previous versions available"

However, the files have actually been backed up successfully to the FileHistory folder on drive D:.

The only temporary workaround I have found is:

Go to:

Control Panel → All Control Panel Items → File History → Select drive

and select the same backup drive again.

After reselecting the same drive, File History creates the new backup versions correctly, and the version history and restore function return to normal.

This issue started after installing KB5101684. Before this update, File History worked normally, and no File History configuration changes were made.

I would like to ask Microsoft and the community to help investigate:

Does KB5101684 affect the File History version index or backup status update mechanism?

Is there an issue where the File History user interface timestamp does not synchronize with the actual backup status?

Could this affect the "Previous Versions" feature not detecting available File History versions?

If this issue is confirmed to be related to KB5101684, I hope Microsoft can address it in the upcoming August security update to restore normal File History backup and version recovery functionality.

Additionally, my laptop's Microsoft Feedback Hub login account is currently experiencing an error, so I am unable to submit feedback directly.

Could anyone in the community please help submit this issue through Microsoft Feedback Hub so that the Microsoft engineering team can investigate?

Thank you very much for your help and for reporting this issue to Microsoft.

Hello,

Thank you for the detailed testing. Based on your description, this does look like a possible File History regression introduced after KB5101684, especially since reselecting the same backup drive immediately rebuilds the version history.

Microsoft’s KB5101684 release notes currently state that there are no known issues. The update does include a File History fix, but that fix specifically concerns automatic backups to SMB network shares, not local drives such as D:. Therefore, your local-drive issue does not appear to be officially documented yet:

https://support.microsoft.com/help/5101684

One important point: you do not need to sign in to Feedback Hub to submit a new report. Microsoft confirms that unsigned users can still submit new feedback; signing in is mainly required to search existing feedback and track its status:

https://support.microsoft.com/windows/f59187f8-8739-22d6-ba93-f66612949332

Press Win + F, choose “Report a problem,” and submit it without signing in. If possible, use “Recreate my problem” and reproduce the issue by modifying a file, running File History, and showing that the timestamp/version does not update. This will include diagnostic information from the affected PC, which is much more useful to Microsoft than another user submitting the report on your behalf.

For now, reselecting the same File History drive appears to be a reasonable temporary workaround.
