In microsoft word, when I go to Share and then try to click on Copy Link, it is not allowing me to copy a link and is grey. Is there another way to get a link to a document or how to fix this.

Where is the document, that you want to share, located?

Document sharing may be restricted for a reason in your organization. However, if the document belongs to you, try downloading it to your computer and then send it as an e-mail attachment instead.

    Dear @Misinski, Jordan,

I understand you're unable to copy a sharing link because the "Copy Link" button is greyed out. This is a common issue, and I’ll give you a direct solution. The "Copy Link" button may be greyed out because your organization’s admin has restricted sharing via link for that specific document, library, or tenant wide. However, you can still generate a link manually.

Here's how to troubleshoot and check if you can copy the link:

    1. Open your document in Word for the Web (browser) or SharePoint/OneDrive.
    2. Click the Share button (top-right).
    3. Instead of "Copy Link," choose "Manage access" (or "More options" > "Manage access").
    4. Under "Direct access," you’ll see a link displayed you can copy that URL directly from there.
    5. Alternatively, in the browser address bar, the URL of the document itself is the shareable link (if permissions allow). User's image

To fix the greyed-out button permanently:

    • If you are the owner/admin: Go to your Admin center > SharePoint admin center > Policies > Sharing > Ensure "Anyone" or "People in your organization" links are enabled for the site. Also check that the document library's "Advanced settings" allow sharing.
    • If you are a user: This is controlled by your IT admin. You can request them to enable link sharing for the site or grant you "Edit" permissions (read-only users often see this greyed out).

Alternative method using the desktop app (Word 365):

    1. Go to File > Save As.
    2. Select your OneDrive or SharePoint account.
    3. Save the document. The Copy Link button under the Share menu should now be active (if permissions allow).

I hope these steps provide a clear path to resolving this issue. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Copy Link is grey for a simple reason in many cases. Word can only make a sharing link for a file that is already saved in OneDrive or SharePoint. A file that lives only on your PC does not have a link yet.

First, check where the file is saved. Look at the top of Word. If the file is on This PC or on your Desktop only, save a copy to OneDrive. Select File. Select Save As. Select OneDrive. Select the folder you want. Select Save.

Wait for the file to finish uploading. Click the OneDrive icon near the clock. If it says syncing, wait until it says up to date. Then try Copy Link again.

Try the OneDrive website if Word still shows grey. Go to onedrive.com and sign in with the same account you use in Word. Find your file. Right click the file. Select Share. Choose Can edit or Can view. Select Copy link.

Check who can open the link. If you need one person only, add that person by name. If you need anyone with the link, choose that option only if your work or school allows it.

Check your sign in. If Word is signed in with a different account than OneDrive, the file may not match. In Word, select File. Select Account. Check the account name. Use the same account in OneDrive.

If the link is still grey after these steps, then ask your admin if sharing is turned off. That is the last step, not the first step.
