If the Power button is missing on your Start Menu, have you installed the Respondus web browser for taking exams on your PC.

If your press Alt + F4 on your Desktop, does that bring up the Shut-down dialog box?

    Hi Pauline Fritz,

If the Power (Shut down / Restart / Sleep) button is missing from the Start Menu on your Windows 11 laptop, this is typically caused by a system policy or power configuration setting that is currently restricting access to these options.

Please try the checking steps below to restore the Power button:

    1, Check System Policy Setting

    • Press Windows + R, type regedit
    • Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    • Locate NoClose
    • If found: Double‑click and set Value data = 0
    • If not found:
      • Right‑click > New > DWORD (32‑bit) Value
      • Name it: NoClose
      • Set Value data = 0

    2, Restart Windows Explorer

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
    • Locate Windows Explorer
    • Right‑click > Restart

    3, Restore Default Power Settings

    • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
    • Run: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

As a temporary workaround, you can still shut down your device by pressing Windows + X > U > U. After completing the steps above, please check if the Power icon has returned to the Start Menu.

On Windows 11, the Power button (with Shut down, Restart, Sleep) can be hidden by policy. To get it back, check these areas:

    1. Check if this is managed by an organization (work/school PC)
If the device is managed, an admin may have applied a policy that hides the Power button or shutdown commands. In that case, only the admin/IT department can restore it by changing the policy.
    2. Group Policy setting that removes Power options (Pro/Enterprise/Education)
An admin can remove all power commands (Shut down, Restart, Sleep, Hibernate) from Start, the sign-in screen, and the Ctrl+Alt+Delete screen using this policy:
      • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar
      • User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands
To restore the Power button and commands, this policy must be Disabled or Not configured. When enabled, it removes the Power button and all related commands from Start, the sign-in screen, and the Windows Security (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) screen.
    3. MDM/Intune or CSP policies (for managed devices)
On devices managed via MDM (for example, Intune), the following Start menu power options can be hidden individually via CSP policies:
      • HidePowerButton – hides the Power button itself.
      • HideShutDown – hides Shut down.
      • HideRestart – hides Restart.
      • HideSleep – hides Sleep.
      • HideHibernate – hides Hibernate.
These are under the CSP path ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/Start/. If any of these are configured, the admin must change or remove them so the Power button and its commands reappear.
    4. Once policies are corrected
After the above policies are disabled/removed and the device is refreshed or restarted, the Power button should reappear on the Start menu. Then Shut down and Restart will be available again:
      • Go to Start, select the Power button, and then select Shut down or Restart.

If this is a personal/home device and the Power button is missing, it typically indicates that one of these policies was set at some point (for example, by a previous admin or configuration script) and needs to be reverted as described.
