If the Shutdown, Sleep, and Restart options are missing in Windows, it may be due to corrupted system files or power settings. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow to repair system files, then restart the computer.

If the power options like ShutDown, Restart... etc. are not available on your PC, did you install the Respondus LockDown Browser on your PC to take an exam, that is the usual cause of the power options being missing.

    2

Click your Start Button, type regedit and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

Click View and make sure 'Address Bar' is turned on.

Paste this into the Address Bar at the top and hit Enter.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Please provide a screenshot of that Registry Editor page.

All the above answers, including the one given by "Microsoft External Staff" are wrong - they are ignoring the fact that the issue occurred after recent (Jan/Feb 2026) Windows Updates.
The solution is to navigate to registry key
    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and set those DWORD values to 0:
    NoClose, NoLogOff, NoChangeStartMenu

If the shutdown, restart, and sleep options are not displaying on your Windows laptop, it could be due to a policy setting that hides these options. Specifically, if the HidePowerOptions policy is enabled, it will prevent users from accessing the shutdown, restart, sleep, and hibernate commands from the Start menu and other locations.

To resolve this issue, you can check the Group Policy settings if you are using a version of Windows that supports it (like Pro or Enterprise editions). Here’s how:

    1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
    2. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
    3. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.
    4. Look for the policy named Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands.
    5. If it is enabled, set it to Not Configured or Disabled.
    6. Restart your computer to apply the changes.

If you are using a Home edition of Windows, you may not have access to the Group Policy Editor, and you might need to modify the registry instead. However, be cautious when editing the registry, as incorrect changes can cause system issues.

Additionally, ensure that your Windows is up to date, as updates can sometimes resolve unexpected behavior related to system options.

If the issue persists, consider checking for any third-party software that might be interfering with system settings or consult Microsoft support for further assistance.

    Hi Kalyan Chintapalli,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

Do you mean that power button is not available on Start menu?

If so, you may restore the Power Button by Registry Editor by following steps:

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support to view the article.

    • Open Registry Editor.
    • Navigate to the following key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Start\HidePowerButton
    • On the right side, double-click the value and change its value data to 0 to enable the power button in the Start menu.

    Example screenshot:

    User's image

Alternative, you can make it even more convenient by creating a Shutdown shortcut.

    • Navigate to the folder you want to place the Shutdown shortcut.
    • Right-click on an empty area > New > Shortcut.
    • Type the location of the item: shutdown /s /t 0 then click Next. If you want a forced shutdown, append /f to the command like this: shutdown /s /f /t 0
    • Type a name for this shortcut: any name you like, example: Shutdown then click Finish.
    • Any time you want to shut down your computer, just double-click the created shortcut.

I hope that above information is helpful to you.
