My gaming laptop frequently won't accept my pin without a full reset first. Error code is: 0x80070006

When I first open my Acer Nitro gaming laptop (Windows 11), I frequently have an issue with my laptop accepting my PIN code. I will type in the correct code, and after I click enter, sometimes my laptop will not accept it and reccommends me to reset my laptop. The error code is 0x80070006, and I have not found a way to fix this issue besides resetting my laptop. The problem is, even after I reset my laptop, this issue with my PIN code eventually resurfaces. Does anyone know if there is something I can do to make my laptop consistently recognize my PIN code? I don't like resetting it almost every day.

    Hi Annabelle Brewster,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum. Thank you for sharing the details about your Acer Nitro laptop and the PIN issue.

The error code 0x80070006 usually points to corrupted PIN configuration files or issues with Windows Hello components. Resetting temporarily clears the problem, but if the underlying PIN data remains damaged, the issue can return.

Here are some possible steps to fix that you can try:

1 - Sign in Using Your Password

    • On the sign-in screen, select Sign-in options and choose your password.
    • Once logged in, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
    • Under PIN (Windows Hello), verify your Microsoft account and create a new PIN.

2 - Delete Corrupted PIN Data

If the problem persists, boot into Safe Mode:

    • Hold Shift and click Restart.
    • Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press F4.
    • Go to: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC
    • Enable Hidden items in File Explorer.
    • Take ownership of the folder (Properties > Security > Advanced > Change owner).
    • Delete all contents inside the NGC folder.
    • Restart and set up a new PIN.

Please also ensure to update Windows and Drivers

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all updates.
    • Update biometric and security drivers via Device Manager.

I look forward to receiving your update. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

The error code 0x80070006 typically indicates an issue with the parameter or argument being passed, which may relate to the PIN creation or recognition process in Windows Hello. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Sign out and sign in again: Sometimes, simply signing out of your account and signing back in can resolve temporary issues.
    2. Check for updates: Ensure that your Windows 11 is up to date, as updates may contain fixes for known issues.
    3. Reboot your device: Restarting your laptop can help clear any temporary glitches that might be affecting the PIN recognition.
    4. Unjoin and rejoin Microsoft Entra ID: If applicable, you can try unjoining your device from Microsoft Entra ID and then rejoining it. To do this, go to Settings > System > About > Disconnect from organization.
    5. Contact Microsoft Support: If the problem persists, it may be beneficial to reach out to Microsoft Support for further assistance, especially since the error code is not explicitly listed with a known mitigation in the provided context.

These steps may help in consistently recognizing your PIN without needing to reset your laptop frequently.
