How do I resolve "The products we found in your account cannot be used to activate Office in shared computer scenarios" on a personal laptop?

Hi, I purchased my work laptop when I left and it was wiped. I'm now trying to activate MS Office products, but I continue to receive the error message: "The products we found in your account cannot be used to activate Office in shared computer scenarios."

Error Code: 0x80004005

Correlation ID: **Remove PII**

I have tried uninstalling Office365, removing existing credentials, and purchasing both a personal and a business license. None of these solutions has worked. I really need to access excel on this laptop - it's the only one I have for the next week. Please help!!

    Dear Carly,

    Nice to meet you!

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community, and I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re experiencing with activating Microsoft Office.

The error message you’re seeing: "The products we found in your account cannot be used to activate Office in shared computer scenarios."
Error Code: 0x80004005 typically occurs when Office is installed in Shared Computer Activation (SCA) mode, but the license associated with your account does not support SCA. This mode is designed for enterprise environments like virtual desktops or shared workstations, and only certain licenses such as Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise or Office 365 ProPlus are compatible.

I'd suggest trying the following steps:

    1. Check Registry Settings

If you're comfortable with editing the registry:

    • Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration

    • Look for the key SharedComputerLicensing and ensure its value is set to 0 (or remove it entirely if not needed).
    1. Check Your License Type

Please verify that your account has a license that supports Shared Computer Activation:

    • Visit https://account.microsoft.com/services and confirm your subscription.
    • If you’re using a Personal or Family plan, these do not support SCA. You’ll need a Business license that includes Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise.
    1. Reinstall Office Without SCA

If you don’t need Shared Computer Activation:

    • Uninstall Office completely.
    • Reinstall Office from https://www.office.com after signing in with your Microsoft account. This will install Office in standard mode.
    1. Use Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant

Microsoft offers a tool that can automatically detect and fix activation issues:

Looking forward to hearing how it goes. Please let us know if you require any additional guidance. We're happy to help!

We hope you have a great day!

    Warm Regards,
