Dear Vasilis,
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum support.
I understand you are experiencing an issue where Word and Excel AutoSave renames your files to a 5-digit number and saves them in a .tmp.drivedownload folder. This behavior is likely due to a synchronization conflict or corruption in the OneDrive cache that interrupts the normal save process.
To resolve this issue, please follow the steps below:
1. Clear OneDrive Cache This helps remove any corrupted sync data that may be causing file misplacement.
- Press
Windows + R, type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset, and press Enter.
- Wait a few minutes for OneDrive to reset. If it doesn’t restart automatically, run it manually from the Start menu.
2. Check AutoSave Settings in Office Ensures that AutoSave is correctly configured and not pointing to a temporary location.
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to
File > Options > Save.
- Make sure AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default is checked.
- Also verify the AutoRecover file location is set to a valid OneDrive path.
3. Verify OneDrive Sync Status Confirms that your files are syncing properly and not being redirected to temp folders.
- Click the OneDrive icon in the system tray.
- Ensure it says “Up to date.” If not, click “View sync problems” and resolve any listed issues.
4. Disable Third-Party Antivirus or Backup Tools Temporarily Some tools may interfere with file locks or sync processes.
- Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus or backup software and test if the issue persists.
Best wishes,
