There is a critical backend bug affecting Microsoft 365 Single/Personal users regarding the Copilot integration in OneNote.
The Issue: Copilot cannot read or ground itself on the opened OneNote page. It triggers a "content not provided" error, fails the token handshake, and searches the OneDrive for related Word files instead of reading the active .onepart file.
The issue manifests in three specific ways:
- In the OneNote Desktop App: Copilot recognizes the title of the opened page (e.g.,
[PageName].onepart), but aborts the text retrieval, stating that the content was not provided and direct retrieval is currently impossible. Therefore, I cannot have a page summarized or analyzed, for example.
- In Copilot Notebook (Web/App): When trying to add a OneNote page as a source, it is not recognized as a native OneNote document. Instead of the purple OneNote icon, it only shows a globe icon (generic web link), which also prevents the AI from extracting any content.
- When highlighting text: Even if I manually select specific text on the OneNote page, the direct Copilot features like "Rewrite" or "Summarize" fail. The AI is unable to process the selected text block either.
Troubleshooting already done:
Confirmed on Windows 11 Desktop (Build 20140), Android Tablet (Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra), and OneNote Web.
Confirmed by Microsoft Support (Ticket [--PII-]) as a backend regression/server-side migration issue.
Copilot's own diagnostic: I forced Copilot to analyze the error in the chat, and the AI explicitly diagnosed that the backend refuses to hand over the contents of the .onepart file. (See attached screenshot).
I am posting this here so an MVP can escalate this directly to the OneNote/Copilot engineering team. This completely breaks the AI workflow for paying M365 Single users.
Thank you for escalating!
