Can Consumption-based Logic Apps be used as tools in the new Microsoft Foundry Agents experience?

Hello,

I am currently migrating an agent from the old Azure AI Foundry experience to the new Microsoft Foundry Agents experience.

In the previous experience, we were able to add an Azure Logic App Consumption workflow directly as a tool/action for the agent. This worked well for our scenario because the agent is used only for demo purposes and triggers the Logic App around 100–200 times per month. With the Consumption plan, the cost was very low and usage-based.

In the new Foundry experience, I can no longer find a way to add an existing Consumption-based Logic App directly as a tool. The available Logic Apps integration seems to be based on MCP, and from the current setup flow/documentation it appears that this requires a Logic App Standard resource.

For our use case, a Logic App Standard plan would introduce fixed monthly costs of roughly €150/month, which is not suitable for a low-usage demo scenario.

My questions are:

  1. Is it currently possible to use a Consumption-based Logic App as a tool in the new Microsoft Foundry Agents experience?
  2. If not, is this planned or on the roadmap?
  3. What is the recommended low-cost migration path for existing agents that previously used Consumption-based Logic Apps?
  4. Would exposing the Consumption Logic App through an OpenAPI tool be the recommended workaround, or is there another supported approach?

Any guidance or clarification would be appreciated.

    Hi Anshika,

thanks for the detailed explanation and clarification. I understand now.

This confirms my assumption that this is a change in the new Foundry experience and that Consumption Logic Apps currently cannot be added directly through the Tools flow.

    Best regards,

    Tobias

    Hi Tobias Eickmanns,

Yes, you can use Azure Logic Apps as tools in Azure AI Foundry agents, but there are a few important points depending on whether you are using Consumption or Standard Logic Apps.

First, the general idea is that Foundry agents can call external tools to perform actions. Azure Logic Apps is one of the recommended ways to build such tools because it can connect to many services and handle workflows easily.

So, in simple terms, Logic Apps can act like a bridge between your AI agent and real systems such as APIs, databases, or business applications.

Now coming to your question about Consumption-based Logic Apps.

Yes, Consumption Logic Apps can be used in many cases. You can create a workflow with an HTTP trigger and then add it as an action or tool in your Foundry agent. This allows the agent to call the workflow when needed. [bing.com]

However, there are some important differences to be aware of.

Consumption Logic Apps are good for simple or lightweight scenarios. They are easy to set up and cost-effective because they run on a pay-per-use model. [oneuptime.com]

But they have some limitations compared to Standard Logic Apps.

For example, when you want to use advanced capabilities like exposing Logic Apps as MCP tools or using connectors directly as tools, Standard Logic Apps are typically required.

Also, Standard Logic Apps provide more control, better performance, and more flexibility for production-level integrations.

So, if your goal is just to trigger a workflow from an agent, a Consumption Logic App with an HTTP endpoint can work.

But if your requirement is to use Logic Apps connectors as tools, or to expose workflows in a more advanced way for agent interaction, then Standard Logic Apps is the preferred option.

Here is a simple way to approach this:

If your scenario is basic, you can create a Consumption Logic App Add an HTTP trigger Register it in Foundry as an action Use it for simple integrations.

If your scenario is advanced, you should use Standard Logic Apps Expose connectors or workflows as tools Use it for enterprise-level integrations.

For more details, you can refer to the official documentation here:

I hope this helps clarify things. Do let me know if you have any further queries.

    Thankyou!
