Disable Teams Chat for new Users

Hello,

I'm looking for a method that prevents sharing the chat of an existing Teams-Chat if a new user is added to this team.

We got several Teams in place. Sometimes new created users are added to these Teams. Due to data protection the new users must not see the prior chat and shared files.

Is there any way (Teams admin center, PowerShell, etc.) to prevent the automatical sharing of the chats.

Best regards,

Lukas

Hi Lukas, I'm Joshua and I am happy to help.

There is a way to prevent new members of a Teams chat from being able to access the chat history and shared files. Here are some steps you can follow:

    1. In the Teams admin center, go to the "Teams" tab and select the team you want to configure.
    2. Click on the "Settings" tab and then "Member permissions."
    3. Under "Member permissions," turn off the "Allow members to browse and search conversations" option.
    4. Click "Save" to apply the changes.

This will prevent new members from being able to see the chat history and shared files that existed before they joined the team. However, they will still be able to see new messages and files shared after they join.

It's worth noting that this setting will apply to all members of the team, not just new ones. If you want to selectively restrict access to chat history and files for specific members, you may need to use PowerShell commands to modify their permissions.

Also, see the following reference link where a similar issue was discussed.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Regards,
    Joshua.
