Hello, dear community,

I am currently experiencing an issue with some clients (Edu tenants in Switzerland) where page distribution in the class notebook (from a “Edu” type team) is not working, generating an error, or is extremely slow.
The team has 24 students.
The page is distributed from the teacher's area.

When it’s very slow, it takes about 30 minutes for the distribution to complete.

The error The error appears after about 30 minutes at 83% and describes "There is a problem distributing this page to <section name> in <notebook name> to 24 students. "
If I expand the details, it only shows me the names of all 24 students.

The Course Notebook is currently 1.62 GB in size.
The issue was reported to me in early April.
In the meantime, it has been working intermittently.
It occurs in both the local app (Windows and MacOS) and the web app (Edge and Safari).

To fix it, we’ve already cleared the Teams, OneNote, and browser caches, but we keep encountering the issues described above.
I also took a look at the students' section, and it seems to me that everything is in order.

Is this happening to anyone else?
Unfortunately, I can’t find any information from Microsoft about a current bug with the class notebooks.

If anyone can help me, I would be very grateful.

Best regards,

Miguel

    Hi @Schneider Miguel,

Thank you for bringing this up and for the detailed description.

From my own experience and from similar cases shared by others in the community, sync overload in OneNote Class Notebooks is commonly caused by a combination of factors. First, a large overall notebook size can significantly increase synchronization pressure, especially once it exceeds the commonly observed stable range (~ 1GB). Second, distributing pages to many students at the same time multiplies the number of sync operations, which can easily overwhelm the synchronization process. Third, pages that contain embedded files such as PDFs, images, videos, or other rich content place additional strain on service limits, making page distribution more likely to slow down or fail intermittently.

Microsoft does have some guidance that many people have found helpful for improving or stabilizing this behavior. If you haven’t already, it’s worth walking through the recommendations in this article: Fix slow sync times and delays when distributing pages in Class Notebook - Microsoft Support

If you’ve tried those steps and the issue still keeps coming back, the next thing that tends to help is collecting diagnostic logs right when the failure happens: Generate diagnostic logs and report problems with distributing pages in OneNote Class Notebook - Mi…

With those logs, you can then raise a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 admin center (this does require admin permissions):  BenutzerbildBenutzerbild Tips: You can turn off the Support Assistant as shown in the screenshot, then enter a few short characters in the search box and select Get Help. After that, wait for the Contact Support button to appear and click it. In the final step, make sure to clearly describe your issue in the description fields and attach the collected logs. You can also add a note requesting that the Microsoft Education Department be involved in handling this ticket.

Once a ticket is opened, a support technician can check things from the backend side, review synchronization behavior, and use internal tools to see why distribution is stalling or failing for that specific notebook and tenant.

Just a quick note as well, this is a user‑to‑user support forum, so I don’t have visibility into Microsoft’s backend systems or the ability to fix this directly. Hopefully, though, sharing what’s worked for others and pointing you to the right next steps will help you get this resolved more smoothly.

Wishing you the best of luck, and I really hope things start working more reliably for you and your students.
