Hi! Christian. Thanks for the details. You described it very clearly, and the good news is, you do not need to buy a new physical QWERTY keyboard.
You can keep your German QWERTZ keyboard layout and still have English (ENG) spelling correction in Word, OneNote, and other Microsoft programs.
How to do this in Microsoft Word / OneNote / Outlook
You can keep the keyboard layout as German but tell Office to proofread in English.
Steps:
- Open Word (or OneNote).
- Select the text or click where you’ll write.
- Go to Review → Language → Set Proofing Language.
- Choose English (United States) or English (United Kingdom).
- Uncheck “Detect language automatically” if you want to lock it to English.
- Press Set As Default (optional).
If “Check spelling as you type” is enabled, Word will underline misspelled English words while still using your German keyboard layout for typing.
You can freely switch between layouts if you sometimes want to use QWERTY for English.
- Shortcut:
Alt+ShiftorWin+Spacechanges keyboard layout.
You can have both:
Deutsch (QWERTZ)
English (US QWERTY)
Even if your physical keyboard says “Z” where “Y” should be, you can learn or label the QWERTY positions if needed, but this is purely optional. Proofing language and keyboard layout are independent.
Best regards,
Kimberly
