Dear Martina,
This procedure is more thorough than simply deleting the iconcache.db file and should be followed exactly. It manually shuts down the Windows shell, clears all icon and thumbnail cache files, and restarts the shell.
Open Command Prompt as an Administrator.
- Click the Start button.
- Type
cmd.- Right-click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator".
- In the black command prompt window, type the following command and press Enter. This will make your desktop, icons, and taskbar disappear, which is normal. ``` taskkill /f /im explorer.exe ``` **Navigate to the Local AppData Directory.** - Type the following command and press Enter: ``` cd %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer ``` **Delete All Icon and Thumbnail Cache Files.** - Now, run the following command to delete all files related to icon and thumbnail caching. The asterisk `(*)` is a wildcard that ensures you get all of them. ``` del iconcache* /a
- Type
del thumbcache* /a ```
*You may get an "access denied" error for some files; this is usually not a problem.*
**Restart the Windows Explorer Shell.**
- Type the following command and press Enter. Your desktop, taskbar, and icons will reappear.
```
explorer.exe
```
After Explorer restarts, Windows will be forced to rebuild the icon cache from scratch for every single application, which should resolve the issue for all icons.
Best Regards,
