    Hi Helle Meinertz,

Good day. I'm Jhun an independent advisor. Sorry to hear about your son's failure to log into his PC. Here are some of the ways to get back your son into his PC. These solutions below are for both Local and Microsoft login account.

FOR MICROSOFT ACCOUNT (if login screen shows like "******@outlook.com, live.com, hotmail.com etc.)
    A. Use the "I forgot my password" from another device if PIN is failing because Windows cannot verify identity.

    1. Go to: https://account.live.com/password/reset.
    2. Enter your son's email > click Next.
    3. If the phone number method is not possible, choose “I don't have any of these” or “I can’t verify my identity”.
    4. You’ll be directed to the Account Recovery Form. This will allow recovery even if phone or SMS method is not possible. They will ask previous passwords, email subjects, contacts, etc.
    5. Fill as much information as possible. Even partial info helps Microsoft verify identity.

    B. Use another device signed in with your son's MS account. If he has Xbox, different PC, or mobile devices logged into the same account:

    1. From that different device, open Settings > Accounts> Password.
    2. Change or reset password.
    3. Return to the problem PC and sign in with the new password.
    4. Set up a new PIN.

    C. If Microsoft recovery fails, try the offline reset through Windows Recovery.

    1. On the login screen, hold Shift and click Restart.
    2. Go to: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    3. Choose Enable Safe Mode with Networking.
    4. If he used a Microsoft account, Safe Mode may allow password reset prompts again.
    5. Try signing in with the Microsoft account password with the newly reset one, if you did Method A or B.

FOR LOCAL ACCOUNT (no email on login screen).

    A. Reset password through the hidden Administrator account.

    1. On the login screen: hold Shift + click Restart.
    2. Go to: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
    3. When Command Prompt (CMD) opens, run this command:
      net user Administrator /active:yes
    4. Restart PC.
    5. Login using Administrator.
    6. Open Command Prompt and run: net user <your son’s username> *
    7. Set a new password.
    8. Restart, login normally, then disable Administrator in CMD: net user Administrator /active:no

    If all above didn't work:

    A. Create a new account using Recovery Environment or

    B. Back-up files and reinstall Windows.

    1. To save files: Boot to recovery
    2. Use “Command Prompt > Notepad > File > Open” to copy files to USB
    3. Then reset Windows.

If files do not need saving:

    1. From login > click Power > hold Shift > Restart
    2. Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Jhun
