Good evening everyone, I have recently came into ownership of a Dell Inspiron 1501 that's running Windows Vista and my grandfather (the previous owner) forgot his password for it. I have everything ready to put a complete fresh install on it but I need to make sure they're aren't any pictures or such still on the computer. Anything I can do or will I have to shell the money for a cable to plug directly into the hard drive to pull everything off?

To answer your question, the latter....shell the money for a cable to plug directly into the hard drive to pull everything off.

The best option is to go to Best Buy and purchase an External Drive case with USB-C to SSD/SATA Adapter. Amazon sells External Drive cases too.,

When you get the case, insert the old hard drive into it and then just plug it into the USB-C port on another computer. This is the easiest (and cheapest) route to take. I'm not a hardware expert but I was able to do this myself without any problem.

    Hi King Noir1:

Sorry, posting instructions on how to recover a lost password or evade Windows security measures violates the Code of Conduct for this Microsoft forum. If you encounter difficulties recovering family photos and other important data from the hard drive of this old computer I'd suggest you post in the MSFN Vista board since there's an active community of Vista enthusiasts still posting there. VistaForums and the BleepingComputer Vista board are less active but searches there might provide a solution.

Please note that support for Vista SP2 ended on 11-Apr-2017 and Microsoft deactivated the Windows Update servers for Win XP and Vista on August 3, 2020. See my 14-Mar-2025 post in Longon007's I am getting 0xc0000135 error code when attempting to boot up my Vista on HP about some of the problems you will encounter trying to perform a clean reinstall of Vista SP2 OS and find compatible software for this OS these days, as well as comments about supported Linux distros that should run on older Vista-era hardware.
