Hail:

I accidentally deleted a folder a few minutes ago, cleaning up my Bookmarks of older bookmarks and bookmark folders.
Trying to restore it, I pressed CTRL-Shift-O, which opened this:

My MSEdge has no longer the Restore button???
How to I restore the map now?
I have no recent back up, so that is a no-go.

Please assist?

Thank you aforehand:
Ben

Thanks, Ben. Perfect. Move this file back to the same folder.

Simply delete the older "bookmarks" file. Change the name of this file from "Bookmarks.bak" to "bookmarks" only and the older items would be picked up by MS Edge automatically.

I am afraid I have zero idea about it sorry.

Thank you for responding, good sir.
I had, thanks to you, success in restoring the folder AND keep my work intact.

    >>I have Bookmark Commander ... maybe this can help out?
I am afraid I have zero idea about it sorry.

Here is the how, good sir:

Sir, the Bookmarks Commander is an extension with great power.
    Bookmarks Commander :: add0n.com
Bookmarks Commander - Microsoft Edge Addons
Basically, this is a Old Win 3.0 Norton Commander ... for Bookmarks!
VERY powerful Bookmarks tool, good sir.
I would say, read the information from the first link given, then, if you like it and want to try it out, get the extension from the official MS site.

I will explain the steps taken.
    Why?
So you can help others out with similar issues.
    What I did:

    1. Copy Bookmark and bookmarks.bak from \User Data\Default to desktop.
    2. Rename Bookmarks to Bookmarks1.
      Rename Bookmarks.bak to Bookmarks.
    3. Copy and overwrite renamed Bookmarks in \User Data\Default with the renamed Bookmarks from Desktop.
    4. Open Edge, start Bookmarks Commander, select the lost folder, and export to JSON.
      CAREFUL:
This copies all subfolders and bookmarks into MEMORY, NOT INTO A FILE!!!
Hence, I opened Notepad, and pasted the whole bit into it.
    5. I then went to back to desktop, rename Bookmarks back to Bookmarks.bak.
      Renamed Bookmarks1 back to Bookmarks.
    6. Copied and overwrite Bookmarks in \User Data\Default with the now named back to original Bookmarks from Desktop. Open Edge, make a folder called TMP.
    7. Activate Bookmarks Commander and pointed in there to the TMP folder I made.
Went to the open Notepad, copied the whole bit that I pasted in there into memory.
    8. Went to Bookmarks Commander, and Imported JSON from the memory in it.
Voila, folder restored, and my work was saved. :)

    BUT!!!
I could NEVER have gotten to it, if you did not bring to to the idea, by telling me about the .bak file!!!
For that, I am VERY grateful, good sir.

Now, I hope, that my links, my wee experiment, and the success I had doing this, will be of aid to many.
At the least, you can help other people now, without them losing their work. :)

Very, VERY many thanks, my good sir!!!

    Kindest regards:
    Ben

"Thank you for replying, good sir.

"I look forward to your response and am eager to collaborate until we find a solution.

I did as per asked, and indeed, the file is there.
Opened it with Notepad, but notepad crashed ... (Way too big a file, I guess?).
Opened it with EmEditor, and found the missing folder after quite a bit of searching.

    Question:
What do I do now, good sir?
I need to restore the folder, without overwriting the current active Bookmarks file, as I was near done (took me 2 whole days ... to give you an idea how many bookmarks I have.), and I am all but eager to undo all that work ... .

Can I copy the content somehow and add it to the active bookmarks file?
I have Bookmark Commander ... maybe this can help out?

    Thank you for the assistance:
    Ben

    Hi Ben,

I'm Sumit, here to answer your query at the Microsoft Community.

Apologies for any inconvenience you are experiencing. I am happy to help you today.

Quickly try this - Microsoft Edge saves a backup in case of accidental deletion.

Press Windows+R keys on the keyboard, or Right-click Start on the Taskbar and choose Run.

    Paste this ==> %localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

    Press Enter.

    You should see

    bookmarks

    bookmarks.bak

named files. The one with .bak is your previous backup.

Please drag this file to the desktop and open with Notepad. Manually check if the folder is in that file by simply searching any URL you think it might be in the same.

I look forward to your response and am eager to collaborate until we find a solution.
