On HP Elite X2 1012 G2, the HID-compliant touch screen driver is totally gone. I need to replace it. I have searched all possible sources for it: HP, Microsoft, online groups. Where do I find this driver and how to install it?

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

Due to the lack of a driver on the HP website's support area, I believe the device uses a generic driver. Therefore, it's a good idea to investigate what might have caused the device to disappear.

You looked for it in Device Manager, right? Perhaps you didn't find it because it's hidden.

Try this:

  1. Press "Windows + X" and select "Device Manager";
  2. Click on the "View" menu and select "Show hidden devices";
  3. Right-click on the computer name at the top of the list and select "Scan for hardware changes";
  4. See if you can find it now.

If you find the device, right-click and select "Properties". Check if there is an error in "Device Status".

Please share a screenshot. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Also, please share a screenshot of your system information so I can get an overview of your computer's configuration and BIOS version.

  • Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Maximize the window and use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Looking forward to your reply.

    On Windows 10, the HID‑compliant touch screen “driver” for integrated touch panels is normally provided by Windows as an inbox HID miniport (for example HID over I²C or HID over USB), not as a separate OEM download. When it disappears, the usual fix is to restore it through Windows Update and the system’s device/firmware stack rather than searching for a standalone driver package.

    Use this sequence:

    1. Run Windows Update fully
      1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options.
      2. Under Update options, turn Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows to On.
      3. Go back to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
      4. Install all available updates.
      5. If a View optional updates link appears, open it, select all optional driver/firmware updates (especially anything related to HID, I2C/SPI controller, system firmware, or chipset), then choose Download and install.
      6. Restart the device after all updates complete, even if not prompted.
      This step is important because integrated touchscreens typically use Microsoft inbox HID drivers (for example HID over I²C) that are surfaced and configured via system firmware, chipset, and controller drivers delivered through Windows Update.
    2. Verify the HID stack and bus connectivity On modern tablets like the HP Elite X2, the touch module is usually connected via HID over I²C (or, on newer systems, HID over SPI/USB). Windows provides in‑box HID miniport drivers (such as the HID I2C driver) for these devices, so if the device is correctly exposed by firmware and the I²C/SPI/USB controller drivers are healthy, Device Manager will automatically show a HID‑compliant touch screen entry under Human Interface Devices. If the entry is still missing after Windows Update:
      • Check that system firmware/BIOS and chipset/controller drivers are fully updated (often delivered via Windows Update on OEM devices).
      • Confirm that the touchscreen device is being exposed on a supported bus (HID over USB, HID over I²C, or HID over SPI). If firmware or ACPI entries are incorrect or missing, Windows cannot enumerate the HID device and no driver will appear.
    3. If still not present
      • If Windows Update and OEM firmware/chipset updates do not restore the HID‑compliant touch screen device, the issue is likely with the device firmware, ACPI description, or the physical touch module itself. In that case, contact the device manufacturer for further diagnostics or repair, as the HID miniport itself is built into Windows and not normally installed manually.

    There is no separate Microsoft download for a generic “HID‑compliant touch screen” driver; the correct approach is to ensure Windows is fully updated and that the device’s firmware and bus (I²C/SPI/USB) configuration allow the inbox HID driver to bind and enumerate the touchscreen.
