A MS app I downloaded will not run

The app in question is the "Daily Commuter Crossword" program. It had been working fine then the other day, It would open and present a blank white screen and not present the puzzle. I went through several troubleshooting steps offered online without luck. I uninstalled the app within the Settings screens then reinstalled the app from the MS store. Still no joy. I went to the "Daily Commuter Crossword" website (not knowing if it is related to the app) and the/a puzzle can be played there but I would like to get back to enjoying the puzzle in the app.

Maybe someone else can see if the downloaded app works for them or if you have had a similar problem, possibly give me an idea how to address it. The inability to reach a "real" someone is troubling.

Thank you... Dave Robinson KB7GP

Hi,

I tried installing it myself and was able to play it without any issues. After installing it, I noticed that the app is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means it’s essentially a website installed as an app through Microsoft Edge. You can confirm this because it appears in Edge’s list of installed apps in edge://apps after installing it from the Microsoft Store. That said, you can try the following steps to restore the game.

  • Uninstall the game from your computer
  • Open Microsoft Edge
  • Click here to navigate to the game’s link in the browser
  • Check the address bar and you’ll see an install icon appear (see the image below)
  • Click the icon and proceed to install

This method installs the game as a Progressive Web App (PWA), which is the same as installing it from the Microsoft Store.

    Did as you instructed.

    1. This is one of the earlier steps I attempted. Did again. No Joy.
    2. I always get the latest updates as MS presents them.
    3. I assume MS store is offering the latest version of the apps. I have no way to verify this.
    4. I copied and pasted your command line within Windows PowerShell as Administrator. The only visible action was a double version of the greater than ">>" chevron.
    5. As far as the EventViewer, I am not sure what I am looking for. The only entries that seem suspicious and similar in time are a WARNING and an ERROR:
      1. <WARNING> The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {2593F8B9-4EAF-457C-B68A-50F6B8EA6B54} and APPID {15C20B67-12E7-4BB6-92BB-7AFF07997402} to the user KB7GP-OFFICE\kb7gp SID (S-1-5-21-3837612309-808839202-2534905940-1001) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.
      2. <ERROR> The server Windows.Gaming.GameBar.PresenceServer.Internal.PresenceWriter did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

As a detail, when I launch the application, it appears to come up and display the SPLASH screen with a button "PLAY" to 'click' . When selected, the window simply goes to white and never recovers. This action does not add additional entries to the EventViewer.

Further down the EventViewer under Microsoft | Windows | Apps | Microsoft-Windows | The most recent entry as information when expanded, displays:

"Activation of app TribuneContentAgency.DailyCommuterCrossword_6wazfkncwrd60!App attempted. Execution state: Attempted activation of the app, 0, The operation completed successfully.."

So, it appears that all (?) is well with the app?

    That's my story... ;)

If the "Daily Commuter Crossword" app is presenting a blank white screen and not functioning properly, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Reset or Repair the App: You can try resetting or repairing the app through the Windows settings. Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, find the "Daily Commuter Crossword" app, click on it, and select Advanced options. From there, you can choose to Repair or Reset the app.
    2. Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that your Windows operating system is up to date. Sometimes, app issues can be resolved by installing the latest updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
    3. Reinstall the App: Since you have already uninstalled and reinstalled the app, ensure that you are downloading the latest version from the Microsoft Store. Sometimes, reinstalling can resolve issues if there were any corrupted files during the initial installation.
    4. Re-register the App: You can also try re-registering the app using PowerShell. Open PowerShell as an administrator and run the following command:
         Get-AppxPackage *DailyCommuterCrossword* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

This command attempts to re-register the app and can fix issues related to app registration.
    5. Check Event Logs: If the app still fails to start, checking the event logs might provide more insight into the problem. You can do this by searching for "Event Viewer" in the Start menu and looking for any errors related to the app.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.
