I had no issues until recently syncing between OneNote on my Android phone and my Mac. However, the Mac version is not syncing now, while the Android versions (phone and tablet) are. Please advise on how to get this rectified.

Hi Vinay,

This is April, I'll be happy to assist you. Sorry to hear that you're having issue with OneNote in Mac. Let me help you out.

Based on the description of the issue you provided, OneNote on your Mac has stopped syncing, even though it still syncs properly on your Android phone and tablet.

When you try to sync OneNote on your Mac, do you see any specific error message or code in the Sync Status window?

Here are step-by-step Troubleshooting for OneNote Sync issues on Mac

  1. Check for Updates
    • Make sure OneNote and the rest of Microsoft Office are fully up to date via the Mac App Store or Microsoft AutoUpdate.
    • Sync problems often occur when your Mac is running an older build, especially after updates on Android or Windows devices.
  2. Confirm Internet Connection and Account
    • Verify that your Mac has a stable internet connection
    • Open OneNote, go to Preferences > Accounts and ensure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account used on your Android devices.
  3. Run a Manual Sync
    • In OneNote for Mac, select Notebooks > Sync Status.
    • Click Sync Now for the affected notebook.
    • If an error code appears such as E000006C, take note of it. It usually points to a specific server or storage issue.
  4. Refresh the Cache and Reopen the Notebook
    • Quit OneNote completely, then reopen it.
    • If syncing still fails, close the notebook and reopen it directly from OneDrive or SharePoint.
    • This forces a cache refresh and often resolves stuck sync processes.
  5. Look for Misplaced Sections
    • Check whether any sections are labeled as Misplaced.
    • If found, manually move them back into the correct notebook to restore proper syncing.
  6. Check macOS Compatibility
    • Some macOS versions have experienced widespread OneNote sync issues due to compatibility problems.
    • If updates don't help, consider temporarily using OneNote Online or rolling back to a previously stable version until Microsoft releases a fix.

Keep in mind that editing notes on Android while your Mac is offline can cause sync conflicts and duplicate pages that must be resolved manually. Also, insufficient OneDrive storage or temporary service outages may prevent syncing: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/fix-issues-when-you-can-t-sync-onenote-299495ef-66d1-448f-90c1-b785a6968d45

I hope this helps. If you need further assistance you can reply to this message.

Thank you,

April P.

If your OneNote on Mac is not syncing, there are a few potential reasons for this issue:

  1. Not Fully Synced: Ensure that your OneNote Notebook content is completely synced with the server. Sometimes, if the sync process is still ongoing, you may not see the latest updates.
  2. Internet Connection: Check if your Mac is connected to the internet. A lack of connectivity can prevent OneNote from syncing.
  3. Account Authentication: Make sure you are signed in to your OneNote account. If your account is not authenticated, syncing will not occur.
  4. Offline Mode: Verify that the OneNote client is not in offline mode, as this will prevent syncing.

To resolve the issue, try the following steps:

  • Check your internet connection and ensure it is stable.
  • Sign out of OneNote and sign back in to refresh your account authentication.
  • Look for any sync status messages in OneNote to see if there are any ongoing sync processes.
  • If the problem persists, you may want to restart the OneNote app or your Mac to see if that resolves the issue.

If none of these steps work, it may take some time for the sync to resolve itself, especially if there are network issues or server delays.

I signed off from account and signed in again. This solved the problem for now.
