I havea computer with OEM win 11 home, need to upgrade it to 11 Pro to acces remote desktop features. I tried to upgrade via systm->activation->product key. But it fails (probably beacuse of OEM bios lock?) Then I typed the default win 11 pro key, went offline and ran the upgrade, went back online and typed in my retail win 11 pro key, only for it to fail again. Perhaps its still tied to an old work machine? But how do I find out? And how do I fix it? Please help :D

Hi,
Try entering a generic key to force its edition of Windows to upgrade/install. Please follow the steps below.

Before you start, it’s important to disconnect from the internet and disable any third-party antivirus software you might have. Go to your Settings > System > Activation and click on Change Product Key. Then, you can enter this generic key:

VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Once you’ve entered the key, it should upgrade you to the Pro version. After you restart your device, you can reconnect to the internet and activate your digital license again.

If it does not work, you need to perform a clean install of Windows 11.

If you require further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Stay Safe!

To upgrade from Windows 11 Home OEM to Windows 11 Pro, you need to ensure that the product key you are using is compatible and not tied to another device. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check the Product Key: Make sure that the retail key you are trying to use is indeed valid and not previously used on another machine. You can check this by trying to activate it on a different device (if available) or contacting Microsoft Support for assistance.
    2. OEM BIOS Lock: Since you are using an OEM version of Windows 11 Home, it is possible that the BIOS is locked to that edition. In this case, you may need to perform a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro instead of upgrading. This involves backing up your data, creating installation media for Windows 11 Pro, and then installing it fresh.
    3. Using the Default Windows 11 Pro Key: If you typed in the default Windows 11 Pro key and it didn't work, it may not be applicable for your specific version or it might not be a valid key for activation.
    4. Activation Troubleshooter: You can also try using the Windows Activation Troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, and look for the troubleshooter option. This may help identify any issues with the activation process.
    5. Contact Microsoft Support: If all else fails, contacting Microsoft Support can provide you with specific guidance based on your situation and help resolve any activation issues related to your product key.

By following these steps, you should be able to determine the cause of the activation failure and find a suitable solution to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.
