It appears that the largest storage space is occupied by my Excel file, which has a file size of 27.6 MB. When combined with the other files below it, the total does not even reach 10 GB, let alone 1 GB. How can I resolve this?

This has happened before. I deleted some files in my OneDrive, and when the storage was no longer full, the autosave feature in Excel started working again. However, for some reason, my OneDrive suddenly filled up to 10GB again quickly a few days after I edited my Excel file.

Hello @Mikhael Nursetyo Selginanda,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum!

For your situation, I will explain detail for you:

When you turn on AutoSave in Excel and save your file directly to OneDrive, every time you make changes to the file, OneDrive may create a new version of that file.

These older versions (created by AutoSave) do not appear in your regular file list, but they are still stored in the system and continue to take up storage space.

For example:

Each version can be nearly the same size as the original file; so, if you edit the file many times, the total storage used can exceed 1 GB just for that one file.

However, in OneDrive, you’ll only see the latest version, which shows 27.6 MB, making it easy to misunderstand and think your storage isn’t full.

For that reason, you can check file versions in OneDrive:

  • You can go to OneDrive on the web, then you right-click on your Excel file and select Version History.

  • You’ll see a list of previously saved versions of the file, and you can delete older versions to free up storage space.

Additionally, to better understand what’s taking up space in your OneDrive, you can use the Storage Metrics view.

  • You sign in to the user's OneDrive via the web.
  • Then, you go to Settings => More Settings=> Storage Metrics

User's image You can then filter and delete unnecessary items, but you need to make sure to also empty the Recycle Bin to fully free up space.

Additionally, could you please confirm whether your OneDrive account is provided by your school or educational institution?

Once again, thank you again for raising this issue; it’s helped broaden my understanding. I hope you understand that I want to help as much as I can within the scope of this forum.

Look forward to hearing from you!
