Locked out of Outlook account due to lost Authenticator—password reset works but MFA blocks login

Hello, I need urgent help recovering access to my Outlook account:

After a factory reset on my phone, I lost access to the Microsoft Authenticator app. I’ve reset my password successfully using my recovery Gmail, but every time I try to log in, I get blocked by multi-factor authentication (MFA). The system asks for a code from the Authenticator app, which I no longer have access to.

I’ve tried:

  • Logging in from multiple devices and networks
  • Using the “Can’t use your Microsoft app?” option, which redirects me to a page that says “Please retry after sometime or try using a different device or network”
  • The recovery form, which only resets the password but doesn’t help with MFA
  • All other sign-in options (PIN, fingerprint, security key), none of which were set up

I’m the rightful owner of the account and can verify my identity. I’ve submitted the recovery form multiple times and received an Issue number, but I’m still locked out.

Please advise how I can regain access or reset the MFA settings. I’m willing to provide any verification details needed.

Thank you.

— Hasan

Hello Hasan,

Thank you for reaching out. I'm very sorry to hear you're locked out of your Outlook account after resetting your phone. I know how stressful this situation is, and I want to help you get on the right path to recovery.

You are correct that this is an MFA issue, not a password problem. Since you've lost access to the Authenticator app, the correct procedure is to start the "Security Info Replacement" process.

Here’s how to begin:

  1. Go to the sign-in screen and enter your email and password.
  2. When prompted for the Authenticator code, find and click the link that says "I don't have any of these" or a similar option.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the process of adding new security information.

Important Expectation: For your account's protection, initiating this process will trigger a 30-day waiting period before you can access your account again. I know this delay is frustrating, but this security measure is mandatory to protect your data and cannot be expedited.

Regarding the error you mentioned, please try the steps above in a private or incognito browser window, which often resolves such issues.

I hope these steps provide some immediate relief and guidance. I recognize the importance of your email account to you, and I'm here to help you through these troubleshooting steps.

Please let me know how these suggestions work for you, or if you'd like assistance in navigating Microsoft's support channels.

Best regards.

    Hi Chloe,

Thanks so much for your guidance.

When I entered my email, I initially saw three sign-in options:

    • Face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key
    • Approve sign-in with a mobile app
    • Use your password

But the mobile app option suddenly disappeared, leaving just the other two. I used my password and surprisingly, it worked! I finally regained access to my Outlook account. I think this might’ve happened because I’d tried signing in multiple times across different devices and browsers.

Before this, I had already tried incognito mode, different browsers, devices, and switching networks. After reading your response, I gave incognito mode one last try and this time, it worked!

    Really appreciate your help.
    Best regards,
    Hasan
