I (and another family member) are currently running on Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2509 Build 16.0.19231.20044) 64-bit

When i open an excel file that contains pivot tables and as soon as we refresh the pivot table/s, the file crashes then open as auto-recovery.

Hi Khaled Salama

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue in such a clear and detailed way.

Based on your description and similar reports from other users, it appears that the crash may be related to a recent Office 365 update (version 2509). The message “a large amount of data” suggests that Excel is struggling to process the query, possibly due to changes in how large datasets are handled post-update.

To ensure the issue is properly tracked and escalated to the Microsoft engineering team, please report it through one of the following channels based on your account type:

If you're an admin, you can raise support ticket from https://admin.microsoft.com/#/support/requests. Navigate to Support > New service request

For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs

If you're a regular user (not an admin):

Open Excel or any Office app, go to Help > Feedback > Report a problem

In the description, mention that the issue started after the 08 September 2025 update, and include the error message “a large amount of data”.  Also, please ask your Microsoft 365 admin to open a support ticket via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center

If you're using a personal Microsoft account:

Go to Help > Feedback > Report a problem in Excel

This will send diagnostic logs to the product team for review.

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

  1. Disable “Add this data to the Data Model” in your query load settings.
  2. Filter your data to reduce the volume being processed (e.g., exclude older or unnecessary records).
  3. Clear Power Query cache: Go to Data > Get Data > Query Options > Data Load > Clear All Caches.
  4. Turn off Grand Totals and Subtotals in PivotTable Analyze (if applicable).
  5. Roll back to the previous Office version (2507) if the issue persists. You can follow this official guide: How to revert to an earlier version of Office - Microsoft Support

Microsoft is aware of similar issues and may release a fix in an upcoming update.

If you need any further assistance or have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d be happy to assist further.
