I have a family subscription for Office 365. I am sharing it with my wife. All was OK, until yesterday when office products stopped working on my wife's laptop. When I try to log in and activate , the error says that 'the licensed product is not for a shared computer', but the laptop is not shared. What should I do please?

Thanks,

En

Hello n kumar,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for your post. I understand that you are having issue with Microsoft 365 Family subscription. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you further.

Based on the error message you're seeing- “the licensed product is not for a shared computer”  and the fact that you're using a Microsoft 365 Family subscription, this issue is likely related to Shared Computer Activation (SCA) being incorrectly enabled on your wife's laptop.

Microsoft 365 Family subscriptions do not support Shared Computer Activation, which is intended for enterprise environments like schools, labs, or virtual desktops. If SCA is mistakenly enabled, Office apps will refuse to activate and show the error you're seeing

There are my suggestion for you to resolve it:

  1. Check for Shared Computer Activation

On your wife's laptop:

  • Open Registry Editor (regedit)
  • Navigate to:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration
  • Look for a key named SharedComputerLicensing
  • If it exists and is set to 1, delete the key or set its value to 0
  1. Run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA)

Microsoft provides a tool to automatically fix activation issues:

  • Download and run the Support and Recovery Assistant
  • Choose Office Activation and follow the prompts
  1. Sign In with the Correct Microsoft Account

Make sure your wife is:

  • Signed in to Windows with her own Microsoft account
  • Signed in to Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.) with the same account that was invited to the Family subscription

You can check this in:

  • Word > File > Account → Look under User Information and Product Information
  1. Remove and Re-add Her to the Family Group

Sometimes re-sharing the subscription helps:

  • Go to Microsoft Family Dashboard
  • Remove her from the group, then re-invite her
  • Make sure she accepts the invite using her Microsoft account

I hope this helps in your situation. Feel free to let me know if you have another update.

Sincerely,

On your wife's computer, she should be logging in using her own Microsoft account.
