Hi everyone,

On Windows 11, whenever I connect an Xbox controller, I keep getting this error message.

User's image

It happens about 6 times within the first 10 minutes, even though the controller itself works fine.

What I’ve tried so far:

Different USB-C cables

Different controllers

Updating via Xbox Accessories

Uninstalling/reinstalling the controller

No luck so far. I also set up a registry key to log the error and that i have analyzed with WinDbg if needed. To be honest, I don't really undesrtand this analysis.

Has anyone run into this before or knows what might be causing it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Zlaad,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

This error 0xc0000142 typically means that a background process or system component (like cmd.exe) is failing to launch properly. Since this happens after connecting an Xbox controller, it’s likely that a service triggered by the controller is trying to launch a script or command line tool, and that process is failing. You're not alone — many users have reported similar issues, and here's how they dealt with that:

1 - Repair the Xbox Game Bar:

  • Open Settings > System > System components > Game Bar
  • Scroll down, click Repair > if the issue persists, click Reset
  • A more nuclear option is to uninstall Game Bar, but process with caution:
    • Open PowerShell as Administrator
    • Run winget uninstall "Xbox Game Bar"

Note: Attempting to uninstall them might result in an error message. Always use caution when removing system apps, as it may affect the functionality of your Windows 11 system.

2 - Uninstall Game Assist:

  • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Game Assist
  • Click three-dot > Uninstall > Confirm the prompt

Note: Some users have mentioned that this fix is related to MS Edge, and you can reinstall Game Bar after uninstalling Game Assist.

We look forward to hearing from you and reviewing the information. Please understand that our initial reply may not immediately resolve the issue. However, we can work together and try out more advanced fixes.
