Unable to deploy VM due to Request Disallowed By Azure policy

I'm using an Azure for Students subscription and trying to deploy a Linux VM using Azure CLI in Cloud Shell. I've registered all necessary providers (Microsoft.Compute, Microsoft.Network, etc.) and cleaned up old resources.

However, when I run az vm create in regions like eastus, southcentralus, or centralus, I consistently get the following error:

RequestDisallowedByAzure: Resource 'my-vm' was disallowed by Azure. This policy maintains a set of best available regions where your subscription can deploy resources.

This blocks not only the VM but also related resources like VNET, NSG, NIC, and Public IP. I’ve tried lightweight VM sizes like Standard_B1s and confirmed that the CLI syntax is correct.

Is there a list of regions that are allowed for VM deployment under Azure for Students? Or is there a way to request access to a specific region for educational purposes?

Any guidance or workaround would be appreciated.

Hi,

Azure for Students restricts which regions you can deploy resources to. Typically you are restricted to five different regions, and these vary for each person.

Please navigate to Azure Policy -- Authoring -- Assignments using link below:

https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Policy/PolicyMenuBlade/~/Assignments

Click on assignment named Allowed resource deployment regions

Examine Allowed locations Parameter value for list of regions, similar to below (regions in screenshot are different than yours):

The regions shown in your Parameter value are the ones you are allowed to deploy resources to. Please try to create resources in one of these regions and let me know the results.
