Why do some sheets have a fuzzy/blurry view and erratic cell selection until a slight scroll is done?

Craziest thing. I have never seen this happen before, and I'm not sure what is causing it. I copied some sheets from another workbook that was emailed to me from a colleague. I have run the Document Inspector and cleaned some things out but it still persists and it almost always random, meaning different sheets will do it at different times. I can't seem to find an answer anywhere so any help would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I can try recreating the sheets affected but again it never seems to be the same ones.

Hi @Craig Gerdes

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. To make sure I understand your request:

  • Have you noticed if the issue occurs more frequently after performing specific actions, such as switching sheets or pasting data?
  • Are you using multiple monitors or a high-resolution display setup?
  • Do you have any add-ins enabled in Excel that might be affecting its performance?
  • Are you using Excel on one monitor or multiple screens?
  • Does this happen with all workbooks or only ones copied from your colleague?
  • What version of Excel are you using?

In the meantime, I would recommend some steps you could try:

  1. Scroll Slightly
You mentioned scrolling helps. This suggests a display rendering issue.
  2. Adjust Excel Display Option
Go to File > Options > General > User Interface
Under “When using multiple displays,” select Optimize for compatibility.
Restart Excel. If already set to compatibility, try switching to Optimize for best appearance and restart again.
This toggles Excel’s rendering mode and may eliminate the blur.
  3. Check Display Scaling
If using multiple monitors, make sure they use the same scaling percentage (e.g., 100% on both).
  4. Test Freeze Panes
Go to View > Freeze Panes > Unfreeze Panes.
If the issue clears up, this may be the trigger. You can leave panes unfrozen or reapply later.
As a workaround, consider using an Excel Table to keep headers visible without freezing.
  5. Start Excel in Safe Mode
    • Hold Ctrl while launching Excel or run excel.exe
    • Open the affected workbook. If the issue doesn’t appear, a COM add-in may be causing it.
    • Disable add-ins one by one via File > Options > Add-Ins > COM Add-ins and restart Excel each time to test.
Focus on add-ins like Power Map, Power Pivot, or Data Streamer.
  6. Repair Office
Go to Control Panel > Programs >Programs and Features > Microsoft 365 Apps. > Click-right and choose Change.

Hi @AlexDN . Thanks for your reply. I will certainly check these all out. Prior to reading your message, I did change all sheets to be at 100% zoom and that seems to have, for now, corrected the problem.
