Computer crashed and now my sound is awful

My laptop sometimes goes into windows recovery if left sleeping for too long. This is NOT the issue I'm trying to fix here. I was told to update my drivers, but I haven't gotten around to doing that just yet. This time, when I booted it back up from crash, all my sound settings were messed up.

Most notable:

Volume was at 75%, but I never go above 40%. It shouldn't've been that high. (I was able to fix this.)

Music sounds like sh!t now - no bass, very flat and tinny.

I am DEVASTATED about the music.

I recall once finding an equalizer setting (or something similar - it was a while ago) and adjusting it to my liking, but I can't find that anymore. I looked up some solutions, but my interface does not have the speaker settings that I would need to correct (audio enhancements tab under speaker settings).

I want to fix my music. How do I adjust the settings to optimise for music?

Hello! Audio effects settings or driver issues can cause this issue. Reinstall the audio driver and see if the issue is resolved.

  1. Search for "Device Manager" in the search bar > Click on the icon > Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" tab.
  2. Right-click on the first Audio device > Select "Uninstall device" > Check "Try to remove the driver for this device" (if applicable) > Confirm > Repeat this step for all Bluetooth devices in the "Sound, video and game controllers" and "Audio inputs and outputs" tabs.
  3. Restart your computer > Open System Configuration > Click on ''Update & Security'' > ''Windows Update'' > ''Check for updates''.
  4. Download all available updates. Click on the ''View optional updates'' option (marked in blue) if available > Select all drivers > Click on ''Download and Install''.
  5. Restart your computer > See if the problem persists.

If your problem persists, please send me the manufacturer and model of your laptop or motherboard.

  • Press WINODWS + R > Type "msinfo32" > In System Summary, send me a screenshot.
