I need my inbox to show who sent the emails instead of just who received it.

My inbox no longer shows who sent emails unless i open them up. I tried new outlook and it is not compatible with our current apps. How do I change my inbox to show who sent the emails instead of who received them? I don't need my name as the title of all my inbox emails as it is hard to navigate.

Hi @David Zach,

Good day! Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you're experiencing an issue where your inbox displays the recipient's name (your own) instead of the sender's name, making it difficult to navigate your emails. I’m happy to assist you in restoring the correct view in Classic Outlook.

I'd suggest trying the following steps:

  1. Open Outlook and go to your Inbox folder.
  2. Click the View tab at the top of the window.
  3. Select View Settings (sometimes labeled as “Current View”).

  1. In the pop-up window, click Columns.

  1. Under Show these columns in this order, look for “To” or any other field showing your name.
  2. Select it and click Remove.
  3. On the left side, under Available columns, find and select From.
  4. Click Add → to move it to the right side.
  5. Use the Move Up button to place “From” at the top of the list.
  6. Click OK, then OK again to apply the changes.

This will ensure that your inbox displays the sender’s name instead of the recipient’s name.

Optional: Reset the Entire View

  • If the issue persists or if multiple columns are misconfigured, you can reset the view entirely:
  • Go to the View tab.
  • Click Reset View.

Note: This will remove any customizations you've made to the inbox layout.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to helping you get back to a smooth email experience. Please don’t hesitate to reply if you need further assistance.

We hope you have a great day!

To answer your question and show the address of who SENT the email:

    1. View > View Settings > Columns
    2. New Column, name: "FromEmail", type: Formula
    3. Enter this formula:
      Switch(InStr([SearchFromEmail],"@")=0,"Internal: "+[From],[From]=[SearchFromEmail],LCase([From]),True,[From]+" <"+LCase([SearchFromEmail])+">")
    4. In "Show these columns in this order", move "FromEmail" to just before or just after "From"
    5. Remove "From" from the list of columns
    6. Click OK until all the dialog boxes are gone

If you use the table view, rather than compact view, you can change the column heading:

    1. View > View Settings > Format Columns
    2. Select FromEmail
    3. Change the label from "FromEmail" to "From"

The formula displays the email as lowercase, which makes it easier to spot phishing / phishing-test emails from cute domains like "deII.com" (which Outlook unhelpfully renders almost identically to "dell.com").
